Polyacrylamide (abbreviated as PAM), commonly known as flocculant or coagulant, has the molecular formula: +CH₂-CHn. It is a linear high molecular polymer with a molecular weight ranging from 4 to 20 million. The solid product appears as white or slightly yellow powder, while the liquid form is a colorless viscous colloid. It is easily soluble in water and decomposes at temperatures above 120°C.
Polyacrylamide molecules contain cationic groups (-CONH₂), which can adsorb and bridge suspended particles dispersed in a solution, exhibiting strong flocculation effects. Therefore, it is widely used in water treatment, as well as in metallurgy, papermaking, petroleum, chemical industry, textiles, mineral processing, and other fields.
Polyacrylamide is classified into: anionic, cationic, and non-ionic types.
Anionic types are mainly used for domestic and industrial water production, as well as industrial and urban wastewater treatment. They are also suitable for the flocculation sedimentation and mud-liquid separation of red mud during alumina preparation. Cationic types have relatively high molecular weights and are primarily used for the flocculation sedimentation of aqueous suspensions and suspended matter. Flocculation is difficult in acidic and slightly acidic solutions containing organic suspended matter. In such cases, cationic polyacrylamide can effectively perform flocculation sedimentation, demonstrating outstanding performance. The usage form is a 0.1-0.2% aqueous solution, which must be prepared with water of PH ≤ 7. After dilution, it is highly prone to hydrolysis. It should be used immediately after preparation or on the same day and is not suitable for long-term storage.
